The political leaders of various key parties in France, despite their different political views, published a joint open letter in the daily newspaper Le Monde, which has the largest readership in France, asking for the mediation of the President of France in guaranteeing the security of Artsakh and Armenia.
The letter, in particular, notes that since December 12, Azerbaijan has seized the only route connecting the Armenian population of Artsakh / Nagorno-Karabakh with the outside world - the Lachin corridor, thereby creating the threat of a major humanitarian catastrophe. This event, since September 2020, is the beginning of a new stage in the escalation of Azerbaijan's attacks on Armenians, whether they are citizens of Armenia or the Republic of Artsakh, and is a gross violation of both international law and the Geneva Conventions, as well as negotiations within the OSCE Minsk Group, which provide for a peaceful resolution Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Azerbaijan will use any pretext to destabilize and persecute the inhabitants of Artsakh and Armenia by its actions with the stated goal of ethnic cleansing.
There are fundamental values, say the politicians, there are inviolable principles that unite us, senators and deputies elected by the French people, regardless of our differences and mutual political views. There are fundamental values, there are unshakable principles that unite us and make us a nation”.
The authors of the letter ask the President of France to "do everything possible to ensure the long-term security of the Armenians of Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh and the Republic of Armenia", and also ask to intervene immediately if Azerbaijan declares that it refuses any international negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) issue, and to accept the following measures:
- Provide for a humanitarian presence in Artsakh and provide immediate economic assistance to Armenia.
- Meet with representatives of Artsakh,
- Provide mediation with partners in the EU and the US so that they take the same steps and establish economic and political sanctions against Azerbaijan with them,
- Provide mediation with partners in the EU and the US to restart the Stepanakert airport and ensure the security of air communication with Artsakh,
- File a lawsuit with the International Criminal Court with the prospect of sending an international peacekeeping contingent by the UN Security Council.
Mr. President, the letter says, today you are in a position to prevent the repetition of history and correct one of its injustices. Today you can prove to the society of nations that France is great and true to world values, to its moral duty and honor. You can finally prove to all our compatriots that France is free, that she can get rid of short-sighted political or economic strategies in order to defend her humanistic ideals, which are the foundation of our nation.
