In the article, on the example of the Karabakh conflict, the role that key concepts have in shaping the image of the conflict and adequate understanding of its essence is considered. The question is analyzed from the point of view of personal experience of researching the problem. Parallels are drawn between scientifically substantiated and spontaneously rooted in the public mind the meanings of these concepts. The thesis is substantiated that concepts that do not meet the criteria of objectivity and are involved in the negotiation process of a politicized conflict distort its essence and become obstacles to its fair settlement.
